Le 1er Festival Khan Tengri 2000 (First Khan Tengri climbing festival)

Du 6 au 27 août 2000 s'est tenu au Kazakhstan le 1er festival Khan Tengri 2000

1) L'organisateur
Le festival est organisé par Rinat Khaïbullin , Asiatourism (devenu TourAsia), le Sporting Club Central de l'Armée. Le but est de promouvoir l'alpinisme dans la région du Tian Shan et de favoriser les échanges entre les grimpeurs de l'est et de l'ouest.

2 ) Les participants
Près de 270 alpinistes ont répondu présent à ce nouveau rendez vous. Une trentaine de pays étaient représentés : Kazakshtan, Russie, Slovénie, Pologne, Italie, Espagne, France, Suisse, Autriche, Allemagne, Nouvelle Zélande, Israël, Etats Unis, Brésil, Corée du Sud. Le camp de base du Nord Inylchek a fait le plein durant cette période. En comptant les expéditions partant du Kirgizsistan et du camp Sud Inylchek c'est 79 alpinistes qui ont rejoint le sommet cette saison. A noter que le pic Pobedy reste quant à lui invaincu en l'an 2000, une équipe kazakh a même du renoncer à 400 m du sommet à cause du mauvais temps. Le festival s'est terminé le 26 août par une remise des prix suivie d'une démonstration de jeux équestres kazakhs traditionnels et d'un grand banquet. Le festival fut une réussite quant à l'ouverture de cette région aux alpinistes occcidentaux.

3) Les stars du festival
* Vladimir Karataev : le grimpeur de Krasnoïarsk a réussi l'exploit de sauter en parapente du haut du camp II (5600 m).

* Valery Babanov : le chamoniard d'adoption devait ouvrir une nouvelle voie en solo sur la face nord du Khan Tengri. Les mauvaises conditions météo et la trop importante couche de neige ne lui ont pas permis de mener à bout cette tentative

* Denis Urubko : le jeune kazakh cloture sa très belle saison (traversée Everest-Lhotse avec Simone Moro au printemps) par une victoire dans la "speed ascent" en 12h21. Le second Nikolay Chervonenco également du club "Kazak Military Sports Club" est arrivé 3h30 aprés lui

* Simone Moro : la star italienne est venue supporter son ami Michel Angelo Oprandi lors de la speed ascent.

* La "Young Team" kazakh a réussi l'exploit de grimper la face nord. La montée s'est faite en huit jours à cause du risque extrème d'avalanches.
* Une équipe de skieurs slovènes a descendu le Khan Tengri par la face sud depuis le col Chapaev (camp III à 5900 m).

Festival Khan Tengri 2000" from the 6th of August to the 27th of August 2000

1) The organisators
In honor of the second millennium, Rinat Khaïbullin , Asiatourism, the Central Sports Club of the Army organized the first international festival for climbers and trekkers "Festival Khan Tengri 2000" in the Central Tian Shan Mountains.

2) The participants
Fifty three professional climbers and two hundred and twenty seven amateurs from 30 countries tried to reach the top of Khan Tengri (7010m) of whom only seventy nine reached the summit Khan Tengri. This season nobody was able to climb Pobeda Peak (7439m) because of very deep snow, high winds and extreme cold. A team of Kazakh climbers had to abandon their attempt on the summit of Pobeda Peak only 400 m from the summit but were forced to turn back due to attrocious weather conditions. On 26th of August the winners were rewarded with a banquet, and Kazakh national games at the main base camp of Ak Kol, followed by a party for all participants.  The festival was a big step forward in the development of Kazakh climbing and opening up their mountainous regions to international teams of climbers.

3) The stars of festival
* Vladimir Karataev : Because of bad weather Vladimir Karataev jumped from the second camp (5600m) and landed on the North Inilchek glacier.

* Valery Babanov : Valery Babanov attempted to climb the North Face solo a feat never before achieved but was forced to abandon his attempt due to bad weather and the danger of avalanches.

*Denis Urubko : the young kazak ends his wonderful season (he made the Everest - Lothse traverse with Simone Moro) by a strong win in the Khan Tengri 's speed ascent. Seven climbers  participated in the speed ascent, Denis won in 12h31. Second Nikolay Chervonenco also of the Kazakh, Military Sports Club arrived 3h30 after him.

*Simone Moro : the famous italian climber came to support his friend Michel Angelo Oprandi for the speed ascent.

* A team of Kazakh alpinists, the famous "Young Team" climbed the previously unconquered North Face of Khan Tengri.  The ascent took eight days due to the danger from avalanches.
* A Slovenian team tried the descent from the summit of Khan Tengry, but because of the avalanche danger the team descent took place from the Chapaev path, (3rd camp, 5900m) by skiing to the South Inilchek Glacier.
